Citing Sources

Before You Begin

Make sure the article you are working on has the following code at the bottom of the page. If it does not exist, your references won't show up properly. If it's a pre-existing article, it probably already exists, and you can skip this step.

= <small>References</small> =
<small>
<references/>
</small>

The Easy Way (not recommended)

This method is not recommended, but may be used. The easiest way to cite a source is to place the URL (web address) between a set of reference tags, like this:

<REF>http://www.web-address-of-source.com</REF>

While the above method will do the job quickly and easily, it's not very descriptive, and not very professional.

The Professional Way (recommended)

This method is recommended. The following citation method is much more descriptive and professional. This method is also 100% compatible with Wikipedia, which means you can copy and paste sections of this wiki, and the citations will transfer flawlessly.

The following link will take you to a Reference Generator page.

http://toolserver.org/~magnus/makeref.php

First choose the source type (News, journal, periodical, report, website, book, encyclopedia, etc), then fill out as many values as you can. Once you've filled out as much as you can, click "Get reference wiki text" to obtain the reference code.

Copy the newly generated code to your clipboard and paste it in the wiki, directly after the information you are citing.

Once you have this method down, please visit this page to learn how to make your citations neat and tidy.

Other Ways

If the method above doesn't give you the citation type (or fields) you need, you can also obtain a professional looking citation by going to the following link.

http://citationmachine.net

Use APA (whenever possible). Choose Print or Online, depending on where your source is located. Then choose the appropriate reference type (book, journal, magazine, newspaper, etc).

Choose the number of authors first, then fill out as many fields as possible. Once you've filled out as much as you can, click the "submit" button. Two citation formats will appear, you want to use the first one (the one on top, not the "In-Text" citation). Copy this to your clipboard, and paste it between reference tags like the following:

<REF>Lastname, A. (2011). Title of the work (Description), Retrieved from http://www.weburl.com</REF>

You may have noticed that Citation Machine italicizes some text. To italicize, put two apostrophes on each side of the appropriate text, like this:

<REF>Lastname, A. (2011). ''Title of the work'' (Description), Retrieved from http://www.weburl.com</REF>

Quote Box Citations

To source a quote for a quote box, please use Citation Machine, but do not use the ref tags.
